Lake Erie Walleye Fishing

Fishing for walleye in Lake Erie differs from most anywhere. In North America walleye are mostly considered to be a nocturnal feeding fish and are most easily caught at night and in the pre-dawn hours.  This is not the case when fishing Lake Erie. Lake Erie has the best daytime walleye fishery in the world and there are countless baits and tactics that anglers use including trolling, casting, jigging and more.

Walleye are olive and gold in color, have very sharp teeth and can grow to be about 30" long and weigh up to 15 pounds.  Their main source of forage in Lake Erie are Emerald Shiners, generally referred to as Minnows. Lake Erie Walleye also consume Shad, Smelt and Small Yellow Perch.

Port Clinton, is considered by most to be the Walleye "Capital of the World."  Unlike many other states and inland Walleye Lakes, the Ohio portion of Lake Erie does not have a closed season on Walleye.  Liberal limits and year round fishing is just a testament to the abundance of Walleye that Lake Erie has to offer.

We mainly fish the best known areas that hold Walleye year round, including and not limited to: The Western Basin Reef Complex with such reefs as Niagara Reef, Toussaint Reef, Round Reef, Locust Reef, Big Pickerel Reef, Little Pickerel Reef, Cone Reef, Flat Rock Reef, Crib Reef, Crane Reef, Turtle Reef, West Reef and North West Reef (the Bean).

We also catch walleye off the Bass Islands Area such as South Bass Island (also where Put In Bay happens to be located), North Bass Island, Middle Bass Island, Green Island, Rattlesnake Island, Catawba Island and West Sister Island. The Camp Perry National Guard Firing Range Buoys; A-Can, B-Can, C-Can, D-Can, F-Can, G-Can.  Maumee Bay The Turn Around Buoy and the Sputnik are also good areas to target summertime walleye. The Sand Bar off of Vermilion, The Dumping Grounds off of Lorain, The Vermilion Weather Buoy, Beaver Park located on Beaver Creek and The Humps off of Avon and Avon Point produce some of the largest walleye in the country.

Methods and Tactics

In April & May we mostly drift using the vertical jigging as our preferred method with 5/8 oz. to 1 oz. hair jigs with Purple, Dark Green, & Black being our most productive colors.  When the water is real cold Crank baits like Reef Runner Deep Divers, Reef Runner Rip Sticks,  Rapala Husky Jerks, & Smithwick Rattlin’ Rogues, trolled at slow speeds from our smaller boat with our Minn Kota Terrova electric trolling motor can entice larger fish.

From May thru September we often employ Dipsey Divers along with big planer boards for trolling from our larger boat.  Small spoons like Yeck & Stinger Scorpians work well.  Ocassioally we run Rapala J-7’s and double willow worm harnesses behind Jet Divers or Tru-Trips.  We also Drift fish with Colorado Blade worm Harneses behind bottom bouncers & Indianna Blade worm Harnesses (most commonly referred too as weapons) casted from spinning rods.

On our smaller boat we will troll behind Offshore Inline Planer boards with Colorado blade worm harnesses utilizing inline weights to get them down to the fish.

Do You Have A Group 3 or Less?

﷯Fish on Our 22' Starcraft! Our 22' Starcraft is fully outfitted to offer fishing charters for 1-3 customers. This is the boat of choice for one of our Trophy Walleye fishing trips or one of our Nite Bite fishing charters. Being able to go slow with our Terrova electric trolling motor allows us to be very stealthy and turn hard on feeding fish to stay on them. We can trailer to any launch to target larger fish year round. the Nite Bite is best during May and October and these trips are usually an exciting twist as compared to fishing in the daylight.
